The challenge
Tech Mahindra have been developing the sales software for BT for 11 years, the
system is hugely complex and required an extensive UX and UI overhaul.

The Team

As the lead UI Designer I worked closely with the CX Designer and the Project Manager at BIO Agency as well as the Product Owner at BT and the dev team at Tech Mahindra, despite the complexities of the multiple stakeholders involved the team worked well together, all being familiar with an agile approach!

BT had just launched their new brand identity and, although marketing and print guidelines had been issued, it didn't touch on digital. With this in mind we set about interpeting what we had as a basis for the foundational elements of the design system.

My Input & Process

I was contracted by BIO specifically for my experience in designing and building design systems, which was a real honour seeing as this agency are highly respected in thier field.

Understanding the application
Our primary objective was to address the UI of a huge back office system used by the BT sales team. The application was a suite of extremely complex cloud based tools, involving large amounts of data. Gaining an understanding of the many functions invloved was a priority and it took a while to sink just how vast the application was!

Building a Design System
Both client and the agency were quite familiar with the atomic design process and so the Design system was built on those principles.

Delivery

We looked at the userflow of several journeys through the system, evaluating the UX and making improvements to the useability, readability and function. This lead to wireframing and ultimately hi fidelity designs with working prototypes for those journeys. The Design system itself was built in tandem and InVision was the primary handover tool for the final delivery to the Tech Mahindra dev team.

Here are some examples of the many screen layouts and pages of the design system that were produced as part of the project, it's very indigo! but that's BT for you!

Part of the foundational section of the design system: colours. The global header, one of the 'Organism' level components. One of the screen layouts showing a slide in drawer. A proposed layout for one of the dashboard views. Charting examples also formed part of the design system.

These are just a tiny selection of the many screen layouts and detailed design system that was put together for BT. To be the lead UI Designer on a system of this scale was a truly rewarding experience.
